“WORDS THAT BUILD OR BREAK”
Psalm 19:14 NIV
Pastor Brandon Stone
Crossroads Church of God/Jesup
Psalm 19:14 - May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
INTRODUCTION — THE PRAYER BEFORE THE WORDS
•Psalm 19 begins with creation declaring God’s glory.
oThe heavens speak.
oThe skies proclaim.
oCreation testifies without words.
•But David ends the Psalm personally — with a prayer about his speech.
David understands:
•God is not only concerned with what we see…
•God is concerned with what we say.
The transformation God wants most is not around us — but within us.
Key Truth: Your mouth reveals your heart, and your words shape your world.
Luke 6:45 — 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
•Psalm 19:14 shows three spiritual alignments every believer must pursue.
I. GOD CARES ABOUT THE WORDS WE SPEAK (“Let the words of my mouth.”)
A. Words are spiritual expressions
•David begins with speech — what is heard publicly.
•Words are not casual; they are spiritual offerings before God.
In the Old Testament, acceptable sacrifices were brought intentionally before the Lord. David desires his speech to become an acceptable offering.
B. Words carry power and direction
Proverbs 13:3 - Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
•Words build or break.
•Words heal or harm.
•Words release faith or spread fear.
C. Practical Illustration — Speaking Life
When we understand God hears our words:
•We speak encouragement over our families.
•We speak hope into our community.
•We speak unity within our church.
Every word either agrees with heaven or reinforces negativity.
Ask:
•Do my conversations sound like faith?
•Would God receive my words as worship?
II. GOD TRANSFORMS THE HEART BEHIND THE WORDS (“…and the meditation of my heart…”)
A. Speech begins in the heart
•David moves from external speech to internal condition.
•“Meditation” (higgayon) refers to inner dialogue — what the soul quietly rehearses.
•Before words are spoken publicly, they are formed privately.
B. The heart determines the mouth
Matthew 12:34 - “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
•Negative speech begins with unchecked thoughts.
•Faith-filled speech begins with renewed thinking.
C. Transformation starts internally
Romans 12:2 - 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
•God does not simply modify vocabulary; He renews the heart.
Illustration - What we continually think becomes what we
consistently say:
•Fearful thoughts → anxious speech
•Critical thoughts → negative speech
•Faith-filled thoughts → life-giving speech
Ask yourself:
•What conversations am I having inside my mind?
•What thoughts am I rehearsing daily?
Private meditation always becomes public declaration.
III. GOD DESIRES WORDS THAT PLEASE HIM (“…be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”)
A. Words are meant to please God, not people
•David’s goal is not approval from others but acceptance by God.
•“Pleasing” refers to sacrifices accepted by the Lord.
•Our speech can become worship.
B. Knowing God changes how we speak
David calls God:
1. Rock — stability, security, foundation
2. Redeemer — rescuer, restorer, deliverer
When we trust God as Rock and Redeemer:
•We stop speaking defeat.
•We stop declaring hopeless outcomes.
•We begin speaking faith.
Colossians 4:6 - 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
•Grace-filled words reflect redeemed hearts.
Illustration - People who know God as Redeemer speak differently:
•They declare promise over problems.
•They speak hope in hard seasons.
•Their words reflect trust instead of fear.

CONCLUSION — ALIGN YOUR MOUTH WITH YOUR
REDEEMER

When words change:
•Atmospheres change
•Relationships change
•Faith increases
Closing:
This week:
